Wema Bank’s digital banking platform, ALAT, has been named Nigeria’s Best Digital Bank at the 2025 Euromoney Awards for Excellence, held on Thursday, July 17, at The Peninsula Hotel in London.
The award recognises ALAT’s pioneering role as Africa’s first fully digital bank and its continuous innovation in digital financial services. Developed by Wema Bank, Nigeria’s oldest indigenous bank, ALAT has evolved into a comprehensive digital ecosystem offering banking, lifestyle, and financial solutions to users in Nigeria and the diaspora.
Since its launch on May 2, 2017, ALAT has redefined digital banking by integrating services such as bill payments, airtime purchases, personal and group savings, stock investments, travel bookings, event ticketing, and healthcare consultations. The platform also provides tailored loan options for both salaried and self-employed individuals.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Wema Bank’s Managing Director/CEO, Moruf Oseni, said the recognition affirms the bank’s commitment to innovation and its impact on Africa’s digital economy.
“The world is moving fast, and digital is becoming indispensable. From typewriters 80 years ago to a digital bank powering over 150 FinTechs today, Wema Bank has consistently led innovation,” Oseni said. “This award is a call to keep building for the future.”
Wema Bank marked its 80th anniversary in May 2025, coinciding with ALAT’s eighth year of operation. The bank reiterated its pledge to empower lives through digital transformation and position Nigeria as a leader in financial technology on the continent.
