Manchester United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following the club’s disappointing start to the season, the Premier League side confirmed on Monday.
United’s defeat at West Ham on Sunday marked their fourth loss in nine league games, leaving them 14th in the table and securing just one win in their last eight matches across all competitions.
“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” the club stated. “Appointed in April 2022, Erik guided the team to two domestic trophies—the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful for his contributions and wish him success in his future endeavors.”
In the interim, former United star Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over as head coach, supported by the current coaching staff, while the club seeks a permanent replacement.
Ten Hag’s tenure had been under increasing scrutiny, particularly as United struggled with their worst start to a top-flight campaign since the 1989/90 season. Despite the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in May, questions over Ten Hag’s position intensified in recent weeks, even as United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe initially backed him to stay on at Old Trafford.
