Renowned entrepreneur and financial expert, Pascal Dozie, founder of the now-defunct Diamond Bank and a key figure in Nigeria’s telecommunications revolution, has passed away. His death, which occurred just a day before his 86th birthday, signals the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most influential business leaders.
Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Dozie distinguished himself early with academic excellence. He began his education at Our Lady’s School, Emekuku, and went on to earn a degree in Economics and a master’s in Administrative Science from the prestigious London School of Economics.
In 1990, Dozie founded Diamond Bank, which swiftly gained a reputation for innovation and excellence in Nigeria’s banking sector. Under his visionary leadership, the bank grew to become one of Nigeria’s most respected financial institutions before merging with Access Bank in a historic deal. Upon his retirement, he handed over the reins of the bank to his son, Uzoma Dozie, solidifying the family’s legacy in the financial services industry.
Beyond banking, Dozie was instrumental in transforming Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape. He was the founding chairman of MTN Nigeria and played a pivotal role in its launch and early development. His strategic guidance helped MTN become a leading force in the country’s telecom sector, fundamentally changing how Nigerians connect and communicate.
Pascal Dozie’s enduring legacy spans across finance and technology, sectors in which his leadership, foresight, and commitment to national development will continue to inspire generations to come.
