The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting tax compliance among Nigerian businesses through a strategic partnership with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). This collaboration was highlighted at the opening of the 19th Abuja International Trade Fair, themed “Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Finance, and Taxation,” held in Abuja on Monday.
FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, represented by Director of Taxpayers Services, Dr. Lovette Ononuga, commended the ACCI for its role in promoting trade and fostering collaboration among entrepreneurs.
“This event continues to highlight the strength and resilience of Nigerian entrepreneurs,” Adedeji stated. “Collaboration is key to advancing tax advocacy and promoting voluntary compliance. Our partnership with institutions like the ACCI is vital in raising awareness about the benefits of tax compliance in a growing economy.”
Adedeji emphasized that working together would help build a culture of compliance, contributing to a stable and predictable business environment. Ononuga further noted the role of technology in streamlining the tax process, making it easier for businesses to meet their obligations. “Automation has simplified tax compliance, allowing businesses to thrive and pay taxes efficiently,” she said, reiterating FIRS’s commitment to a customer-centric approach and equipping tax officials with the necessary skills to serve the public.
ACCI President, Chief Emeka Obegolu, also addressed attendees, highlighting the trade fair as a key platform for business connections. “The Abuja International Trade Fair (AITF) has become a premier multi-sectoral event in Nigeria, providing both local and international exhibitors the opportunity to showcase their products and stay updated on evolving industry trends,” he remarked.
The fair’s theme, “Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Finance, and Taxation,” sparked discussions on essential elements for economic growth, with Obegolu pointing out that efficient transportation solutions are critical to overcoming logistical challenges and reducing costs for businesses.
National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Dele Oye, praised the partnership between FIRS and ACCI, stressing the need for policies that support a conducive business environment. “Effective transportation networks, accessible trade finance solutions, and fair taxation policies are crucial as we aim to position Nigeria as a leader in both regional and global commerce,” Oye stated.
The event continues to foster dialogue on critical issues that impact businesses and the economy, with tax compliance and efficiency at the forefront of discussions.
