At a recent event addressing femicide and its societal impact, Hon. Kadijat Kareem Omotayo, Personal Assistant (PA) to the President on Constituency Affairs, delivered a powerful speech emphasizing the urgent need for cultural reform to combat violence against women and girls. She called for amplifying the voices of constituents and working together towards a safer, more equitable society for all.
“We must engage local communities, listen to their concerns, and collaborate to find effective solutions,” she said, advocating for support for women’s organizations, quality education, job training, and economic empowerment. She stressed that addressing the root causes of violence requires challenging societal norms where men hold the majority of power and authority.
Promoting healthy relationships and providing support for survivors were central themes in her message. She urged the nation to unite in condemning violence and building a culture of respect and equity for women and girls. “If you are being abused, don’t stay silent for the sake of your children. It only passes on trauma and depression,” she warned.
Hon. Omotayo also recognized the role of law enforcement but emphasized that not every situation requires police intervention. She encouraged individuals to seek support from activists and human rights organizations, urging them to walk away from abusive relationships to ensure their safety.
In closing, she called for collective action, urging everyone to join the fight against violence and advocate for the rights of women and girls. “The voice must be raised, and we need more women standing up for what is right. Let’s work towards a society that protects and values women,” she concluded.
The speech resonated deeply with the audience, reinforcing the collective responsibility to end violence and ensure the safety, dignity, and empowerment of women and girls.
