The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has assured political parties and candidates of a level playing field in the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, set for September 21. Egbetokun made this commitment on Thursday during a peace accord meeting held in the state capital, Benin City.
He emphasized the collaboration between the police and other security agencies to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in ensuring a free, fair, and credible election.
“As we all know, the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, will be assisting in the conduct of the governorship election in this state on Saturday, September 21,” Egbetokun stated.
The IGP reiterated the Nigerian Police Force’s dedication to upholding the integrity of the electoral process, stressing that officers would remain neutral while vigilantly carrying out their duties.
“I am here today to affirm our commitment to a peaceful and secure electoral process. We recognize the importance of this moment and the trust placed in us to ensure the integrity of this election,” he said. “We will remain impartial, professional, and vigilant, ensuring a level playing field for all political parties and their candidates.”
Egbetokun also urged stakeholders to prioritize peace, tolerance, and respect for democracy, highlighting the need for collective efforts to ensure a smooth and credible election.
