The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, delivered a thought-provoking convocation lecture at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, on November 13, 2024, highlighting the vital role of citizens in driving national development. In his address, the IGP stressed the need for collaboration between security agencies, government, and the public to build a stable and cooperative society essential for sustainable growth.
He urged citizens to embrace their constitutional duties, emphasizing the importance of integrity, patriotism, and civic engagement. According to the IGP, national development is a collective responsibility that extends beyond government officials and institutions. He called for a unified approach, where security, governance, and civic responsibility work in tandem to ensure the effective implementation of policies, the maintenance of peace, and the upholding of democratic values.
Dr. Egbetokun also reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to national security, citing community policing as a key model of cooperation between law enforcement and citizens that has contributed to improving public safety and reducing crime. The IGP’s lecture underscored that the path to a prosperous nation requires active participation from all citizens, fostering a more inclusive development approach that values communal input and action.
