The Labour Party caucus in the Senate has demanded an apology from Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo over comments suggesting that Peter Obi must seek security clearance before visiting the state.
In a statement signed by Senators Victor Umeh, Ireti Kingibe, Okey Ezea, and Tony Nwoye, the lawmakers described the governor’s remarks as “executive rascality” and a threat to the constitutional rights of movement and expression.
“Governor Okpebholo’s unguarded statement threatens Mr Peter Obi’s life, freedom of movement, and personal security,” the senators said. “He must apologise to Nigerians for violating the Constitution he swore to uphold.”
The backlash followed Okpebholo’s comments at a public event where he alleged that Obi’s previous visit had triggered violence, resulting in three deaths. “Obi must not come to Edo without clearance,” the governor said.
Labour lawmakers, however, referenced Section 41(1) of the Constitution, noting that every Nigerian has the right to free movement.
They also called on the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the DSS to investigate the governor’s comments, warning that “executive lawlessness” cannot be tolerated in a democratic society.
