The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that corps members across the country will soon receive a monthly allowance of ₦77,000, marking a significant increase in their remuneration.
Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the NYSC Director General, disclosed this development on Tuesday in Abuja, according to a statement issued by the scheme’s spokesperson, Caroline Embu.
General Ahmed emphasized his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of corps members, stating that arrangements for the disbursement of the new allowance have already been finalized.
The increment follows the federal government’s review of Nigeria’s minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in July 2024.
This is the second adjustment to corps members’ allowances in recent years. In 2020, the NYSC raised the monthly stipend from ₦19,800 to ₦33,000 after the introduction of a ₦30,000 minimum wage.
The latest minimum wage increase, hailed as a victory for Nigerian workers, was the result of protracted negotiations between the government, labor unions, and the private sector.
The NYSC, established in 1973 to foster unity and national integration, remains a critical institution in Nigeria. The allowance increment is expected to further boost the morale of corps members serving across the country.
