Former President Barack Obama on Wednesday extended his congratulations to Donald Trump on his election victory, emphasizing the critical importance of a peaceful transfer of power.
In a statement, Obama acknowledged the outcome was not what he had hoped for but reinforced the democratic principle that election results must be respected, regardless of personal preferences. “Living in a democracy is about recognizing that our point of view won’t always win out, and being willing to accept the peaceful transfer of power,” he said.
Obama’s comments stood in stark contrast to Trump’s refusal four years ago to concede to Joe Biden, a move that ultimately led to the violent January 6th Capitol attack by Trump supporters.
The former president also expressed pride in Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, for their “extraordinary” service and the “remarkable campaign” they ran, despite their defeat. “They are two extraordinary public servants who ran a remarkable campaign,” Obama said.
