President Bola Tinubu has approved N108 billion in relief funds for the 36 states of the federation to combat flooding and other natural disasters. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a meeting at the State House in Abuja.
Addressing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, Shettima described the situation in Maiduguri as a “national calamity” and emphasized the federal government’s commitment to working with states to address these pressing issues.
“The President has demonstrated his zeal, willingness, and commitment to partner with the states in tackling these challenges,” Shettima stated. “Recently, he approved the release of N3 billion to each state of the federation to address some of these challenges, ensuring that all regions of the country are included.”
Shettima also commended Speaker Tajudeen for his leadership in the National Assembly, noting that despite nearly 70% of the members being newly sworn in, the Speaker has
successfully maintained stability in the House of Representatives.
“There is a lot of stability in the House of Representatives, and we commend you for providing that leadership. You are one of the key pillars of our democratic journey,” Shettima said, emphasizing the importance of a harmonious relationship between the executive, legislature, and judiciary to sustain democracy in Nigeria.
In response, Speaker Tajudeen expressed condolences to Shettima, Tinubu, and the people of Borno State, pledging the National Assembly’s support for communities affected by recent disasters.
“We in the National Assembly are committed to providing the necessary support to the affected communities. We share your pain and concerns, and we stand together in this,” Tajudeen said. “Insha Allah, people will soon return to their normal lives and livelihoods, and we will work to ensure that the necessary palliatives are provided.”
Tajudeen also urged Shettima to convey the National Assembly’s solidarity and support to the Governor and people of Borno State.
