Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the 2023 Kogi State gubernatorial election, has expressed confidence in a favorable outcome as the Supreme Court reserved judgment in the ongoing legal battle over the governorship seat.
Ajaka has been locked in a protracted legal dispute with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), challenging the election results.
Speaking to reporters after the Supreme Court’s decision to reserve judgment, Ajaka stated, “We have presented a strong case before the Supreme Court, and we are confident that justice will prevail. The people of Kogi State deserve a leader chosen through a free, fair, and transparent election, and we believe that our case will vindicate the will of the people.”
Ajaka further expressed his trust in the judiciary, saying, “We have faith in the integrity of the Supreme Court, and we believe that they will serve justice. I urge all my supporters to remain patient and peaceful as we await the court’s decision.”
He emphasized that the struggle is not only about this election but about ensuring the foundation of democracy in Kogi State is built on fairness and transparency.
The legal battle began after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Ododo the winner of the election. Ajaka contested the results, accusing Ododo and the APC of electoral fraud, citing irregularities in the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and discrepancies in the final vote tally.
