Lagos, Nigeria – In a recent interview on Jordan 105.5FM, Lagos, Dr. Abel Damina, the prominent Nigerian pastor and founder of Power City International Church in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, addressed accusations that he has been overly critical of fellow ministers of the Gospel.
Dr. Damina, renowned for his passionate advocacy for doctrinal purity, clarified that his remarks were not intended to attack or belittle other men of God but were aimed at correcting what he sees as doctrinal errors in the teaching of the Gospel.
Speaking on “Feedback,” a Sunday evening magazine show hosted by Charles Ideho on Jordan FM, Dr. Damina emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Gospel message. “My intention is not to criticize or condemn anyone personally,” he stated. “If there’s any of my messages in which I personally attacked any minister of the Gospel, let them show me.”
He further explained that many of the controversial videos circulating online were created by content creators and bloggers seeking to increase their views and readership, often distorting his words for sensationalism. “I am simply committed to ensuring that the truth of the Gospel is accurately presented and understood,” Dr. Damina insisted.
Dr. Damina has gained attention for his outspoken criticism of what he terms the “transactional Gospel” and “tithe mongering,” which he argues are misinterpretations of Christian faith that have led many believers astray. He has often highlighted discrepancies between traditional church teachings and what he believes to be the true message of the New Testament.
When asked whether not paying tithes could cause a Christian to miss heaven, Dr. Damina refuted such claims, stating, “There is no truth in that. If the payment of tithes was so important, Jesus, Peter, Paul, and other apostles of Jesus would have paid tithes.” He questioned why Christians should be required to pay tithes when the very figures they are meant to emulate did not do so.
His remarks have sparked significant debate within the Nigerian Christian community. While some applaud his commitment to doctrinal truth, others view his approach as divisive. However, Dr. Damina remains resolute in his mission. “We must remember that our ultimate goal is to lead people to Christ and to help them grow in their understanding of God’s word,” he added. “If we see something that is not in line with the Scriptures, it is our responsibility to correct it with love and humility.”
