President Bola Tinubu has unveiled plans for a 30-day National Youth Conference aimed at addressing key challenges faced by young Nigerians. The announcement was made during his 64th Independence Day Anniversary broadcast on Tuesday, where he outlined the government’s commitment to engaging the country’s youth in nation-building.
Tinubu stated that the modalities and selection process for the conference delegates would be finalized soon, emphasizing the importance of youth involvement in shaping the nation’s future.
“As we work to overcome the challenges of the day, we remain mindful of the next generation, seeking to galvanize their creative energy towards a better future,” Tinubu said in his address. He noted that leadership must focus on building a future for the next generation, ensuring that young people play a key role in its design.
“I am pleased to announce the gathering of a National Youth Conference. This will be a platform to address the diverse challenges and opportunities confronting our young people, who make up over 60 percent of our population,” he added.
According to the president, the conference aims to provoke meaningful dialogue and empower youth to actively participate in nation-building. Key issues to be discussed include education, employment, innovation, security, and social justice. Tinubu assured that the government would consult closely with youth representatives in designing the event and would thoroughly consider the recommendations from the forum.
“The government will implement the outcomes from this forum as we continue our mission to build a more inclusive, prosperous, and united Nigeria,” he pledged.
In his speech, President Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s decision to reform the country’s political economy and defense architecture, describing these changes as vital for the nation’s survival. He lauded the resilience of Nigerians, noting that the country has weathered crises that have led to the disintegration of other nations.
On security, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s determination to defeat banditry and terrorism. He expressed hope that as the government reclaims control from these groups, displaced farmers will return to their fields, boosting agricultural production and helping reduce soaring food prices.
