Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the recent attack in Yelwata, Benue State, which reportedly left over 100 people feared dead.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Saturday night, Atiku described the killings as part of a deepening national security crisis and called for urgent action from both state and federal authorities.
“I am deeply anguished and shocked by the devastating news of the fresh attacks in Benue State,” he said. “These killings, once again targeting defenceless communities, underscore the escalating insecurity crisis facing our nation.”
Atiku called for a thorough investigation, urging both the Federal Government and Benue State to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice. He also advocated for an increased security presence and the deployment of adequate resources to protect vulnerable communities.
He emphasized the need for community engagement through dialogue with local leaders and civil society, as well as prompt support for survivors, including medical assistance, trauma counselling, and livelihood restoration.
“This assault on innocent Nigerians is not just a local tragedy; it is a national emergency,” Atiku stressed. “We must hold our leaders accountable and demand sustainable solutions to end the bloodshed.”
The attack, which occurred on Saturday, June 14, was reportedly carried out by suspected criminal herders. In response, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings, calling them unjustifiable.
On Sunday, angry youths took to the streets of Makurdi, staging a protest at the Wurukum roundabout to demand justice. Attempts by Deputy Governor Sam Ode to address the crowd were rebuffed, with protesters insisting that Governor Alia address them in person. Security forces later dispersed the demonstration using tear gas.
