Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has dismissed as fake images circulating online purporting to show him in meetings with former United States President Donald Trump.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle, Obi described the photos and accompanying narratives as doctored and entirely false. He clarified that he has not recently met Trump or held any such meeting with Lagos transport leader, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as M.C. Oluomo.
“These fabrications highlight the persistent dangers of fake news and disinformation in our society. They are not only misleading but deliberately designed to confuse, misguide, and distract the public,” Obi stated.
He urged Nigerians and the international community to remain vigilant, verify information before sharing, and resist the spread of propaganda that undermines truth and integrity. Obi further stressed that if such meetings had taken place, he would have publicly announced them through his official platform.
“My politics has never been about seeking praise or cheap publicity but about confronting the real challenges facing Nigeria with solutions anchored on integrity, accountability, and transparency,” he added, noting that his focus remains on tackling insecurity, promoting the rule of law, improving education and healthcare, and lifting millions out of poverty.
In a separate statement, Obi’s spokesman, Mr Val Obienyem, also discredited the photo and narrative, describing them as “entirely untrue.”
“Our attention has been drawn to a fake image circulating online of Mr Peter Obi with US President Donald Trump, accompanied by a false claim that Mr Trump praised him. We wish to make it clear that the picture is fake, and the accompanying story is entirely untrue,” Obienyem said.
He emphasized that Obi has not met Trump nor received any such commendation from him, stressing that the incident underscores the dangers of fake news and disinformation.
Obienyem reaffirmed that Obi remains committed to responsible leadership rooted in integrity, accountability, and transparency, not on falsehoods.
