Rising Oil Prices Push Buyers Toward Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicle (EV) sales are rising sharply across Southeast Asia as consumers turn to alternative transport options to cushion the impact of soaring fuel prices triggered by the Middle East war.
The surge in crude oil prices—up by about 50 percent since the start of the conflict and recently exceeding $100 per barrel—has significantly increased petrol costs, pushing cost-conscious buyers toward electric mobility.
In Vietnam, leading EV manufacturer VinFast recorded a 127 percent jump in annual sales in March, reaching 27,600 units. Industry data indicates that electric vehicles accounted for around 40 percent of total car sales in the country in 2025, with momentum continuing to build.
Consumers cited rising fuel expenses as a major driver of the shift. Many are opting for EVs to reduce monthly transport costs and avoid long queues at petrol stations.
The trend extends beyond Vietnam, with Chinese automakers gaining traction across the region. BYD, a key rival to Tesla, recorded strong demand at regional auto shows and dealerships.
At a recent auto exhibition in Bangkok, BYD secured the highest number of orders, surpassing traditional market leader Toyota for the first time. Similarly, dealerships in the Philippines reported a surge in customer traffic, with inventories quickly reserved.
Industry analysts attribute the rising demand to economic factors, particularly the sharp increase in petrol and diesel prices, which is influencing consumer purchasing decisions.
Meanwhile, governments across the region are stepping up efforts to accelerate EV adoption. In Jakarta, authorities recently pledged stronger measures to develop a national EV ecosystem aimed at reducing energy consumption.
Data from the China Passenger Car Association shows that exports of Chinese EVs—many destined for Southeast Asia—doubled in March compared to the same period last year.
Analysts at Capital Economics noted that global demand for electric vehicles is gaining momentum, with registrations more than doubling in countries such as Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand, while rising significantly in India and Australia.
The shift underscores a broader transition toward cleaner and more cost-efficient transportation, as consumers and governments respond to energy market volatility.
