Co-hosts Mexico sealed top spot in FIFA World Cup Group A with a perfect record after a 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic at Estadio Azteca on Wednesday.
The win ensures Mexico advance to a Round of 32 clash at the same venue on June 30, while the Czech Republic exit the tournament after finishing bottom of the group.
After a goalless first half, Mexico took control through second-half goals from Mateo Chávez in the 55th minute and Julián Quiñones, who capitalised on defensive errors to double the lead six minutes later. Álvaro Fidalgo completed the scoring in stoppage time with a powerful finish from a cross.
Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa also featured as a second-half substitute, marking a remarkable sixth World Cup appearance at the age of 40.
Elsewhere in Group A, South Africa secured a historic place in the knockout stage with a 1-0 win over South Korea, completing a dramatic turnaround after losing their opening match to Mexico.
The Bafana Bafana, competing in their first World Cup since hosting the tournament in 2010, had been written off following their 2-0 defeat in the opener. However, a draw against the Czech Republic and a decisive victory over South Korea, sealed by Thapelo Maseko’s second-half goal, ensured their qualification.
South Africa coach Hugo Broos described the achievement as historic and deeply emotional.
“We scored that goal, and it was 20 minutes of heartbeating and hoping that the game should be finished as soon as possible,” Broos said.
“So yes, we are in the second round. It’s historic. I’m very happy for the guys. I’ve worked with them for five years, and what we did in those five years is amazing.”
