Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched a ₦1 billion economic empowerment programme for 5,000 beneficiaries and commissioned 50 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses in Edo State.

The events took place in Benin City on Thursday, October 15, 2026, during her one-day working visit to the state.

The buses, procured by the Edo State Government under Governor Monday Okpebholo, are intended to improve public transportation and provide residents with an additional commuting option.

Oluremi Tinubu said improved access to affordable transport would benefit students, traders, workers and other commuters, while creating employment opportunities in the CNG sector.

Under the empowerment scheme, 5,000 beneficiaries are expected to receive ₦200,000 each to support their livelihoods, strengthen small businesses and promote financial independence.

The programme is designed to support women, young people and vulnerable residents across the state.

During the visit, the First Lady also paid a courtesy visit to the palace of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, who commended her efforts to promote women’s welfare and girl-child education.

Oluremi Tinubu said the transport and empowerment initiatives were aimed at expanding economic opportunities and improving the wellbeing of Edo residents.
