The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has called for intensified efforts to empower African youth, emphasizing their critical role in shaping the continent’s future and securing its relevance in global socio-economic discussions.
Afreximbank President, Benedict Oramah, made the remarks during the 5th Youth Summit hosted by the Grand Africa Initiative (GAIN), a pan-African non-governmental organization, in Abuja. Themed “Connecting Africa through Youth Entrepreneurship and Digital Innovation,” the summit attracted youth representatives from 91 countries, government officials, and stakeholders, including the Development Bank of Africa.
Africa’s Youth: A Transformative Force
Oramah underscored that Africa boasts the youngest and fastest-growing population globally, with over 60% of its citizens under the age of 25. He described the youth as a dynamic force capable of driving economic and social transformation but noted the barriers they face, including limited access to education, skills training, and entrepreneurial opportunities.
“The youth population represents both a challenge and an immense opportunity for growth, innovation, and transformation in Africa,” Oramah said. He referenced a survey indicating that 78% of young Africans aged 18 to 24 aspire to start businesses within five years, underscoring the need for mentorship, support, and robust digital infrastructure.
Call for Policies to Foster Youth Entrepreneurship
Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Isaac Parashina, also addressed the summit, reiterating Africa’s distinction as the youngest continent, with 70% of its population under 30. Parashina stressed the urgency of deliberate policies to empower youth entrepreneurship, citing its potential to unlock Africa’s economic potential and tackle unemployment.
He further highlighted the importance of digital infrastructure, stating, “Reliable internet, mobile technology, and digital payment systems are essential for connecting young entrepreneurs to global markets and creating scalable solutions to local challenges.”
GAIN’s Commitment to Empowerment
Ms. Chinwe Okoli, founder of GAIN, expressed pride in her organization’s dedication to equipping African youth with entrepreneurial, innovative, and employability skills. “Our work is focused on preparing African youths to harness opportunities, drive innovation, and contribute meaningfully to economic growth,” she said.
Participants at the summit shared positive feedback, with Abdullahi Musa describing it as a transformative experience. “The opportunities I’ve gained from previous summits and masterclasses have sharpened my skills and influenced my entrepreneurial journey positively,” he said.
The event highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between governments, development partners, and private organizations in creating a conducive environment for African youths to thrive.
