The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has disclosed that each of the 109 Nigerian senators receives a total of ₦1,063,860 in salary and allowances per month. The breakdown includes a basic salary of ₦168,866.70, alongside various allowances such as ₦126,650 for motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance, ₦50,660 for entertainment, and ₦422,166.66 for constituency allowances, among others.
RMAFC Chairman M. B. Shehu issued the statement on Tuesday in response to former Senator Shehu Sani’s recent claim that each senator receives an additional ₦13.5 million monthly running cost, beyond the ₦750,000 stipulated by the Commission. Shehu clarified that the RMAFC lacks constitutional authority to enforce compliance with the remuneration package, a gap currently being addressed by the National Assembly.
The RMAFC chief further explained that while regular allowances are paid monthly with the basic salary, non-regular allowances such as furniture and severance gratuities are paid once per tenure. Vehicle allowances are offered as loans.
In response to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s remarks on Sunday criticizing lawmakers for allegedly determining their own salaries, Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu challenged the accuracy of these claims. Adaramodu asserted that the Senate only receives salaries as allocated by the RMAFC, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
