Governor Pastor Umo Eno has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for strategic alignment with the federal government and widespread stakeholder consultations.
Speaking at a press briefing in Uyo, Eno said the decision followed three months of engagement with political leaders and community influencers. He described the move as a calculated effort to secure greater federal support and integration for Akwa Ibom.
“We must interpret the times and align accordingly,” Eno stated. “This decision is for the strategic development of our state, not personal ambition.”
Though his planned defection had drawn public opposition during a recent town hall in Ikot Abasi, the governor proceeded, submitting his resignation from the PDP earlier Friday.
Eno acknowledged the role the PDP played in his rise to power but emphasized that national realities necessitated a shift. He also disclosed that Thursday night’s meeting with top PDP leaders marked the end of his internal consultations.
The defection marks a significant political shift in Akwa Ibom, a long-time PDP stronghold, and could impact federal influence in the state. Political analysts say it may open doors to increased infrastructure investment and federal appointments.
“This is not politics for its own sake,” Eno concluded. “It’s about ensuring Akwa Ibom has a seat at the table where national decisions are made.”
Governor Eno, who assumed office in 2023 under the PDP, becomes the latest South-South leader to realign with the APC-led federal government ahead of the 2027 elections.
