LAGOS – Poultry traders in Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, have expressed mixed reactions to the current prices of live chickens, with some saying rising costs are reducing their profit margins while others believe prices remain manageable for business.
Speaking to Trust Africa News, Samuel Chukwuka, a trader in mature live broiler chickens weighing between 2kg and 2.5kg, said he currently purchases each bird for between ₦10,000 and ₦15,000.
According to him, the high purchase price has significantly reduced his profit margin, as he buys the chickens directly from suppliers before selling them to customers.
“If the prices were lower, the business would be more profitable and we would be able to sell more to customers,” he said.
Another poultry trader, Tony Okochi, who sells live old layer chickens at Iju-Ishaga Roundabout, said the birds currently sell for between ₦5,000 and ₦7,000 each.
He described the current price range as relatively affordable, adding that it still allows him to purchase stock and resell to customers at a reasonable margin.
Similarly, Kelvin Chukuma, a trader in live indigenous cockerels, said the birds currently sell for between ₦6,000 and ₦12,000 each.
He noted that the prevailing prices are manageable for his business but warned that any further increase could make it difficult for traders to purchase sufficient stock.
The traders said fluctuations in poultry prices continue to influence their businesses, with profitability depending largely on wholesale costs and consumers’ purchasing power.Copyright TRUSTAFRICA NEWS.
