Celtic Football Club is mourning the death of John Clark, a legendary member of the iconic “Lisbon Lions” squad that won the 1967 European Cup. Clark passed away on Monday at the age of 84.
A one-club man, Clark made over 300 appearances for Celtic after his debut in 1959 and served the club for more than four decades in roles including player, coach, assistant manager, and kit manager.
He was best known for his pivotal role in Celtic’s historic 2–1 victory over Inter Milan in Lisbon, making the Scottish club the first British team to win the European Cup.
“Everyone at Celtic Football Club is deeply saddened at the news that legendary Lisbon Lion, John Clark, has passed away,” the club said in a statement. “His legacy will live forever in the hearts of the Celtic family.”
Clark also won four Scottish league titles, four League Cups, and three Scottish Cups during his 13-year playing career.
“Greatness is a word often used lightly, but in John’s case, it is entirely fitting,” said manager Brendan Rodgers. “He was instrumental in our greatest triumph and will always be remembered.”
