EFCC Probes Ex-Lagos Speaker Obasa Over ₦43.5bn Misappropriation

By Ayomide Otitoju

Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is facing intense scrutiny from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following his impeachment on Monday. He is accused of misappropriating ₦43.5 billion in public funds.

EFCC sources revealed to Peoples Gazette that Obasa, currently in the United States, will be arrested upon his return to Nigeria. “The evidence against him is overwhelming. This time, he won’t escape,” an anonymous EFCC insider stated, confirming the agency’s readiness to act.

Luxury Spending and Previous Investigations
Obasa’s impeachment followed reports of his lavish spending on luxury vehicles, prompting further investigation. This is not his first run-in with the EFCC. In 2020, he was probed for allegedly spending ₦1.1 billion in a week but was not charged. However, EFCC officials are confident that the current case offers no escape for Obasa.

“Heavy hammer is waiting to fall on him,” the insider added, emphasizing the agency’s determination to pursue the case.

Political Isolation
Obasa, once a powerful figure in Lagos politics, appears to have lost key political support, including from President Bola Tinubu. Sources close to Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila revealed that Obasa’s attempts to reach out have been ignored, signaling his political isolation.

“His political connections have dried up. He’s on his own now,” an insider disclosed.

EFCC’s Stance
The EFCC remains committed to apprehending Obasa. “There is no political interference in this case. He will be questioned by our detectives,” an EFCC source asserted.

The next steps in this case will unfold in the coming days as the agency prepares to take action against the embattled former lawmaker.
