The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82.
This was announced in a statement on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani. The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period.
The statement described the holiday as “a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his enduring legacy in governance and national development.”
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the statement read. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by fostering peace, patriotism, and national unity—principles that defined the late president’s public life. National flags across the country are flying at half-mast during the declared mourning period from Sunday, July 13.
Meanwhile, funeral arrangements have been concluded. Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, announced that Buhari’s remains will arrive in Katsina by noon on Tuesday, ahead of a 2 p.m. burial in Daura, his hometown.
The late president’s body will be accompanied by a Nigerian delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila. Other dignitaries, including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, are also part of the delegation.
Mourners have begun gathering in Daura, where Buhari’s residence has become a focal point for tributes. Neighbours, family members, and long-time associates described him as a humble, disciplined, and generous leader who remained deeply connected to his roots.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s elected president from 2015 to 2023 and as military head of state from 1984 to 1985, is remembered for his anti-corruption stance and commitment to national security. His passing marks the end of a consequential era in Nigerian politics.
