Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, outlined a series of strategic policy initiatives on October 30 at the AFRIPOL Steering Committee Meeting in Algiers. In his presentation, Egbetokun focused on enhancing effective policing across Nigeria and the wider West African region, proposing action plans for coordinated crime-fighting and officer training to address modern challenges in policing.
Egbetokun emphasized the importance of inter-regional collaboration on investigations and operations, as well as the need for continuous training to prepare officers for the complexities of policing in today’s diverse societies. As part of his official duties, the IGP also visited AFRIPOL’s headquarters, where he was welcomed by Douglas Kanja, Inspector-General of the National Police Service of Kenya. The two IGPs exchanged insights on managing violent protests and discussed strategies for enhancing law enforcement across Africa. Ambassador Mohammed, Head of Legal at the African Union, was also present to provide legal perspectives.
In his address, Egbetokun urged regional leaders to ensure the swift implementation of policies established during the meeting, stressing that these initiatives could greatly enhance policing efficiency and expertise in combating rising crime rates across Africa.
