MTN Nigeria has been awarded a “B-” in Climate Change and a “C” in Water Security by the global Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), highlighting its efforts in addressing environmental challenges and improving transparency in managing climate and water-related risks.
These scores reflect MTN’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, enhancing its non-financial disclosures and sustainability reporting. Tobe Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Nigeria, emphasized the company’s focus on embedding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices in its operations. He cited initiatives such as reducing energy consumption, improving energy efficiency, and advancing the adoption of renewable energy.
MTN’s Project Zero initiative, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, further underscores the company’s dedication to sustainability.
The CDP, a global non-profit organization, conducts the world’s only independent environmental disclosure system. In 2024, over 24,800 companies across 90 countries participated in the CDP’s environmental impact reporting, driving informed decision-making for sustainable growth.
Two Killed in Tanker Fire at Ibadan Filling Station
A tanker fire at the GABSTAB Mega Petrol Station in the Orita Challenge area of Ibadan, Oyo State, has claimed the lives of two individuals—a petrol tanker driver and his assistant. The tragic incident occurred early on March 4, 2025.
According to Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, the fire service was alerted at 5:15 am and swiftly deployed personnel to the scene. Akinyinka confirmed that the driver and his motor boy were burned to death in the blaze.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by brake failure, which led to the tanker losing control and spilling its contents, igniting a fire. Fortunately, quick action by the Oyo State Fire Service and private fire responders prevented the fire from spreading to nearby residential areas.
The remains of the victims were handed over to officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the scene.
