In a continued effort to combat cancer, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and its partners TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, SAPETRO, CNOOC, and PRIME 130 have launched an advanced mammography center at the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
This facility, the second of its kind following an earlier center at Garkida General Hospital in Adamawa, is part of NNPC’s initiative to expand access to early cancer detection and treatment through the NNPC Foundation’s free screening programs. The initiative aims to reduce Nigeria’s high cancer mortality rate by improving diagnostic services.
Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC’s Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), Bala Wunti, represented by Head of Business Services Sani Kabo, emphasized the center as a testament to NNPC’s commitment to quality healthcare in Nigeria. “Under the state government’s guidance, we hope this facility becomes a vital resource for timely cancer diagnosis and treatment,” Wunti said.
TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Ltd’s Managing Director, Matthieu Bouyer, represented by Acting CSR General Manager Tonye Osifo, highlighted TotalEnergies’ dedication to healthcare through partnerships, stating, “This center joins 84 projects delivered since 2016, aligning with our #WorkingWithCancer initiative to support those affected by cancer.”
Equipped with the latest diagnostic tools, including a Senographe Pristina 3D mammography system and stereotactic biopsy capabilities, the center can handle over 120 examinations daily, enhancing cancer diagnostics for Nasarawa State and the North Central region. The facility also includes treatment rooms, a radiologist office, and a 20-person waiting area for patient comfort.
