The historic coronation of Oba Abimbola Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo took place today, marking a significant moment in the ancient town of Oyo. Owoade succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who passed away on April 22, 2022, after an illustrious reign of over 50 years.
The event, held at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo, was graced by a host of dignitaries, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who had previously presented the staff of office to the new king in January. Notable figures in attendance included the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and Aare Oona Kankanfo of Yoruba, Iba Gani Adams, among others.
The coronation signifies the commencement of a new era for the revered Alaafin stool, one of the most significant thrones in the Yoruba Kingdom. The event also marks a fresh chapter for the people of Oyo, the state, and the entire Yoruba community, both at home and abroad.
Oba Owoade, born 47 years ago to the Owoade-Agunloye royal family in Oyo, is a well-educated and accomplished individual. He completed his secondary education at Baptist High School, Saki, and pursued higher studies in Mechanical Engineering at Federal Polytechnic Ilaro and The Polytechnic, Ibadan. He later obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sunderland and Northumbria University.
Before ascending the throne, Oba Owoade worked in various professional capacities, including as a Project Coordinator at Manitoba Hydro in Canada and as an Entrepreneur and Philanthropist. He is also the President of Manitoba Limited and has a background in real estate investment and financial services in Canada.
The crowning of Oba Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo marks the dawn of a new leadership era for the ancient town and reinforces the cultural significance of the Yoruba monarchy.
