Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has shared key lessons for Nigeria following its disappointing performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In a series of tweets on Monday, the former Anambra State governor acknowledged some positive outcomes but stressed the need for Nigeria to address its leadership challenges.
Obi pointed out that while Nigeria failed to secure a single medal, several Nigerian-born athletes excelled for other countries, highlighting the potential that can thrive in supportive environments. He cited examples such as Yemisi Ogunleye, who won gold for Germany, and Annette Echikunwoke, who claimed gold for the United States. He also mentioned Ebelechukwu Agbapuonwu, who won silver for Bahrain, and Rena Wakama, Nigeria’s female basketball coach, who was named the best coach at the Olympics.
Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s lack of medals is a reflection of its broader leadership issues, urging citizens to replace poor political leaders with those capable of transforming the country. He argued that until Nigeria dismantles its corrupt system, its potential will remain unfulfilled.
In response to the Olympics outcome, Nigeria’s Sports Ministry announced plans to begin preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, vowing to restore the country’s sporting glory.
