Polaris Bank, in collaboration with strategic partners, has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing the alarming number of out-of-school children in Nigeria. The initiative has provided continuous education opportunities for over 16,000 studentssince 2020, with plans to expand its reach to 50,000 students by 2028.
In its latest phase, the Bank distributed school essentials—bags, uniforms, sandals, books, and pens—to 1,000 students in 10 public schools across five states. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
Speaking on the initiative, Polaris Bank’s Managing Director/CEO, Kayode Lawal, encouraged students to seize the opportunities that education provides, emphasizing the Bank’s dedication to reducing Nigeria’s out-of-school population and increasing access to quality education, particularly for the girl child.
“This intervention is a cornerstone of our sustainability efforts aimed at addressing the education gap in vulnerable communities. Education is the foundation of a brighter future, and we are committed to empowering the next generation to thrive,” Lawal stated.
Tackling Barriers to Education
The initiative addresses one of the critical barriers to school enrollment in Nigeria—the lack of basic school essentials. According to UNESCO, over 20 million Nigerian children lack access to basic education, and research indicates that even the absence of essential school supplies significantly contributes to this crisis.
The Bank’s program reaches Nigeria’s most underserved regions, with recent visits to schools such as Opebi Junior Grammar School in Lagos, Government Girls Secondary School Kundila in Kano, and Government Day Junior Secondary School Maitama in Abuja. A visit to Gbaja Junior and Senior Secondary School in Surulere, Lagos, has been rescheduled for January 2025 to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Holistic Education for Students and Teachers
Beyond material support, the initiative integrates the Brighter Minds Programme, which introduces students to brain-training techniques and emotional intelligence education. This approach builds resilience, focus, and confidence, equipping learners with critical life skills.
Additionally, the Inspire Teachers Training Program complements the initiative by offering educators a three-day value-based education workshop. The program covers innovative teaching methods, heart-centered education, and communication skills, fostering a ripple effect as trained teachers share their knowledge with peers.
Sustained Impact and Future Goals
Polaris Bank’s education initiative, supported by partners like EvolveCSR, reflects a collaborative effort to bridge educational gaps in Nigeria. Since its inception, the program has achieved remarkable milestones, driving transformative change in nine states.
While the current impact reaches 16,000 students, the Bank remains steadfast in its mission to expand access to education, ensuring no child is left behind. By empowering students and equipping teachers, Polaris Bank is shaping a brighter future for Nigeria, one student at a time.
