Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has donated ₦100 million, four two-bedroom apartments, two utility vehicles and assorted food items to the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The governor also donated four cows, 500 bags of rice and other food supplies to support legionnaires and the families of fallen heroes, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to their welfare.
Sanwo-Olu announced the donations on Monday during the State Executive Council meeting, which also featured the Appeal Fund and official launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
He said the annual emblem launch ahead of the January 15 commemoration has become a longstanding national tradition, stressing that remembering fallen heroes and supporting those who sustained life-altering injuries while serving the nation is both a constitutional and moral responsibility.
According to the governor, the survival and sovereignty of Nigeria are anchored on the sacrifices of members of the Armed Forces, adding that governments must continue to honour them in tangible ways.
“This is our way of saying thank you for the sacrifices that allow all of us to live in a free and united country,” Sanwo-Olu said, pledging continued support for the Nigerian Legion, Lagos State Council.
Earlier, the Commandant of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion, Mr Akeem Wolimoh, commended the governor and the state government for their sustained support, describing Lagos as one of the most supportive states to legionnaires nationwide.
He noted that previous interventions by the state government have helped improve the living conditions of legion members, while some of their dependants have benefited from skill acquisition and empowerment programmes facilitated by the Ministry of Women Affairs and other state agencies.
The event was attended by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat; Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service, Bode Agoro; Chief of Staff, Tayo Ayinde; members of the State Executive Council; and officials of the Nigerian Legion.
Also present were senior security officials, including the Commander of Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Ikeja, Air Commodore M. A. Imam; Commander of 9 Brigade, T. A. Lagbaja Cantonment, Brigadier-General A. O. Owolabi; Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh; and other personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
