Indian authorities on Sunday confirmed the recovery of the second black box from the Air India Boeing 787 that crashed in Ahmedabad, killing at least 279 people, including 38 on the ground.
The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) was located two days after the crash, senior government official PK Mishra announced. The flight data recorder (FDR) had been found on Friday, one day after the aircraft went down in a residential area shortly after takeoff.
Only one person survived out of the 242 passengers and crew aboard the London-bound flight, making it one of the deadliest air disasters in India’s history.
“The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched a detailed investigation, and the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting a parallel probe under international protocols since the aircraft is American-made,” Mishra said.
Authorities say it remains too early to determine the exact cause of the crash, and the data retrieved from the recorders will be critical to the investigation.
