Umma Getso, the 2019 vice-presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), has claimed that some women in politics falsely accuse men of sexual harassment to serve their own political interests.
Speaking on the ongoing controversy between Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Getso called for fairness and due process.
“Let there be justice. Let women be treated right wherever they are,” she said. “But I must say, from my experience working with men nationally and internationally, there is a need to redefine what sexual harassment truly means.”
Getso argued that false allegations have been used as a tool in various parts of the world, including Nigeria. “We have seen cases where women take advantage of their gender to make accusations for personal interests,” she stated.
She also warned of the potential consequences such claims could have on women’s participation in politics. “If a sitting female senator claims she has been sexually harassed, it may discourage many men from supporting women in politics,” Getso added.
The case between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio remains a subject of national debate, with calls for a thorough investigation and justice for all parties involved.
