Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has approved the payment of a ₦70,000 national minimum wage for workers on the state and local government payrolls. This was disclosed by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Emmanuel Fashe, during an interview with journalists following a closed-door meeting with the governor on Tuesday.
According to Comrade Fashe, state government workers will begin receiving their salaries with the new minimum wage starting in August 2024, while local government employees will start benefiting from September.
He explained that the state will initially implement the wage increase using the consequential adjustment table from 2019, pending the release of a new table by the National Salaries, Wages, and Income Commission.
“Whatever the worker was getting under the current national minimum wage of ₦32,000, as it applies to Adamawa State, will be proportionally adjusted in line with the new ₦70,000 minimum wage,” Comrade Fashe said.
He emphasized that Governor Fintiri is committed to the welfare of workers, highlighting the early implementation of the new minimum wage even before the national commission’s table is released.
