The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has issued a public advisory urging Nigerians to take preventive measures against the increasing threat of Mpox, particularly emphasizing the heightened risk for those living with HIV. This call is part of NACA’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of all Nigerians.
Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director General of NACA, made this appeal in a statement released on Saturday by the agency’s Head of Public Relations & Protocol, Toyin Aderibigbe. Dr. Ilori highlighted the significant risks posed to individuals with compromised immune systems, including those living with HIV, noting that they may experience more severe symptoms if infected with Mpox.
“While anyone can contract Mpox, individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those living with HIV, are at a greater risk of experiencing severe symptoms,” Dr. Ilori stated. She assured the public that NACA is closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with public health authorities to ensure that adequate resources and information are available to address this emerging threat.
“Our priority remains the health and well-being of Nigerians, especially those who are most vulnerable. We are committed to providing the necessary support to help people living with HIV navigate this added challenge,” Dr. Ilori emphasized.
She also advised the public to remain vigilant and informed, stressing the importance of early detection and treatment. “If you notice any unusual symptoms, such as a rash or fever, it is imperative to seek medical attention immediately. Early intervention is key to managing Mpox effectively.”
Dr. Ilori urged everyone, particularly those living with HIV, to adhere to preventive measures and seek medical advice promptly if needed. “Together, we can overcome this challenge and continue to make strides in the fight against HIV and other public health threats,” she stated.
Mpox is a rare viral zoonotic disease prevalent in several African countries, particularly in the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa. The exact reservoir of the virus remains unknown, but rodents, squirrels, and monkeys are suspected to play a role in its transmission. The Mpox virus can spread from animals to humans and from humans to humans.
To prevent the spread of Mpox, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has advised the public to avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms, particularly those with rashes or skin lesions. Additionally, the public is encouraged to practice good hand hygiene by regularly washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
