The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced robust security protocols for the Ondo State off-season gubernatorial election set for Saturday, November 16, 2024. The measures are aimed at securing a peaceful, transparent, and credible voting process.
As part of these preparations, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Sylvester Abiodun Alabi has been appointed as the coordinating DIG for the election. He will oversee the implementation of security strategies, working alongside Assistant Inspector-General Bennett Igweh and Commissioner of Police Tunji Disu, who have been designated as AIG and CP for the elections, respectively.
A 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. restriction on vehicular movement will be enforced on Election Day, covering roads, waterways, and other forms of transportation, with exceptions for essential services, including ambulances, media, and fire services. Security escorts attached to VIPs are prohibited from accompanying them to polling units or collation centers, and only authorized security personnel will be permitted at election sites, with a strict ban on unauthorized sirens.
To ensure accessible polling for all, special provisions will be made for individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those with mobility challenges. Additionally, dedicated election hotlines will be available for inquiries and reporting incidents.
The Nigeria Police Force urges the public to report any suspicious activities that could compromise the electoral process and underscores its commitment to a safe and democratic environment. In collaboration with the military and other federal security agencies, the Police are focused on securing a fair and peaceful election.
