Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has officially sworn in the newly elected local government chairmen following their victory in last Saturday’s local government elections.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a landslide victory, claiming all chairmanship and councillorship seats across the state. Certificates of return were issued to the winners on Sunday by the Chairman of the Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission (ZASIEC), Bala Aliyu Gusau.
In a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, Governor Lawal praised ZASIEC for conducting what he described as a free, fair, and credible election.
Call for Grassroots Development
Governor Lawal emphasized the critical role of local government councils in addressing the state’s socio-economic challenges and security concerns.
“Local government councils, as the third tier of government, are vital in complementing the initiatives of the present administration to rescue the state from socio-economic issues and the security challenges affecting all parts of the state,” the governor stated.
He urged the new chairmen to prioritize the welfare of their constituents, ensuring equity and fairness in the distribution of development projects.
“Your election is a call to service. Leverage the administration’s social investment programs to create employment opportunities, curb crimes, and promote productivity among youths. Achieve this by embracing transparency, accountability, and prudence in managing public resources,” he added.
Collaboration with State Government
Governor Lawal highlighted the importance of synergy between the state and local government councils, referencing provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“The State Government will continue to collaborate with your councils to achieve shared goals and build synergy for the development of our dear state,” he said.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to fostering grassroots development, describing it as essential for placing Zamfara on the path of growth and prosperity.
