Bishop Thomas Dexter (T.D.) Jakes, leader of the US megachurch Potter’s House, is reportedly stable and under the care of medical professionals after experiencing a health scare while delivering a sermon on Sunday.
While preaching at the church’s service, Jakes appeared to struggle with his breathing and prayed aloud, “The meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, oh Lord,” before bowing his head and lowering his microphone. Church officials quickly rushed to his side, urging the congregation to pray as they surrounded the preacher.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, described the incident as a “slight health incident” and reassured followers of Bishop Jakes’ well-being.
“During today’s service, Bishop T.D. Jakes experienced a slight health incident and received immediate medical attention following his powerful hour-long message,” the statement read. “Bishop Jakes is stable and under the care of medical professionals. The entire Potter’s House family is grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from the community. Thank you for your understanding and continued prayers.”
The church did not provide further details on the cause of the incident or confirm whether Bishop Jakes was hospitalized.
The Potter’s House, a nondenominational church founded in 1996, has a membership of over 30,000, according to its website. The 67-year-old Bishop Jakes has led the church since its inception.
