The Coca-Cola Foundation has improved access to clean water for over 16,000 residents in Borno State through its Strengthening Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Service Delivery (S-WASH) initiative.
In a statement, the Foundation highlighted that the initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Global Environment & Technology Foundation and WaterAid, involved rehabilitating boreholes, establishing handwashing stations, and training women and youths in hygiene practices and water facility maintenance.
The initiative aligns with the global observance of World Water Day, held annually on March 22 to raise awareness about the 2.2 billion people worldwide who lack access to safe water, according to the United Nations.
President of the Coca-Cola Foundation, Carlos Pagoaga, emphasized the organization’s commitment to improving water security in Nigeria.
“This water project exemplifies our efforts to expand access to safe drinking water and enhance water security across Nigeria. We are grateful to collaborate with local partners and communities to maximize our impact,” Pagoaga stated.
Borno State has faced severe water shortages, adversely affecting health, education, and overall quality of life. Under the S-WASH initiative, six communities, two healthcare facilities, and one public school benefited from the intervention.
Zainab Bulama, a healthcare officer at Gamboru Primary Healthcare Centre, underscored the project’s impact, stating, “Before S-WASH, we lacked clean water. Now, with the rehabilitated borehole and handwashing stations, we can teach hygiene practices and ensure quality care.”
Since its inception in 1984, the Coca-Cola Foundation has provided over $1.6 billion in grants globally and remains dedicated to supporting vulnerable communities.
