Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has ended months of speculation over his future by signing a new two-year contract with the Premier League leaders, the club announced on Friday.
The 32-year-old Egyptian international, who joined Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017, has scored 243 goals in 394 appearances, making him the club’s third-highest goalscorer of all time. His latest deal keeps him at Anfield until 2027, offering a major boost to the Reds’ ambitions as they close in on a historic 20th English top-flight title.
“Of course I’m very excited. We have a great team now. Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies,” Salah said in a statement issued by the club.
Salah has been a pivotal figure for Liverpool this season, registering 27 goals and 17 assists in the Premier League, helping the club establish an 11-point lead with just seven matches left under new manager Arne Slot.
“He has shown at this club for so many years in a row how much of a value he is for the club and the team,” said Slot. “As like all our fans and his team-mates, we are very happy that he has extended for two more years. Hopefully, he can show on Sunday again (against West Ham) how important he has been for us all season.”
During his time at Anfield, Salah has helped the club secure a Champions League title in 2019 and their first league crown in 30 years in the 2019/20 season. He has also lifted the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup, cementing his place among the Premier League’s elite.
The forward has twice been named Player of the Year by both the Professional Footballers’ Association and Football Writers’ Association, and is widely expected to secure both awards again this season.
Salah’s contract extension arrives at a crucial time for the club, following a challenging run of form. Liverpool have lost three of their last four matches in all competitions, including a Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain, a League Cup final defeat to Newcastle, and a shock league loss to Fulham that ended a 26-game unbeaten streak.
The Egyptian has also struggled in front of goal recently, scoring only once—via a penalty against relegated Southampton—in his last seven matches.
His future had been a subject of intense debate amid stalled negotiations and reported interest from the Saudi Pro League. Salah had previously hinted at his frustration, telling reporters he was “probably more out than in.” Despite the uncertainty, he has now committed to Liverpool for two more seasons.
The deal also provides clarity amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the futures of fellow stars Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, both of whom are out of contract at the end of the current campaign. While Van Dijk has suggested progress is being made, Alexander-Arnold has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.
Salah, who currently ranks joint-fifth in the Premier League’s all-time scoring chart with 184 goals, now has the opportunity to further chase club legend Ian Rush’s record of 346 goals for Liverpool.
