MTN Nigeria has partnered with CardCentre Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Chams HoldCo, to roll out eco-friendly SIM cards made entirely from biodegradable materials. The initiative, unveiled in Lagos, aims to reduce plastic waste in Nigeria and across West Africa.
In a statement on Monday, the companies said the SIM cards are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and produced using recyclable components and energy-efficient processes. They meet international sustainability standards while delivering the same performance expected by telecom users.
Commenting on the launch, Chief Executive Officer of CardCentre, Lekan Latona, described the collaboration as a milestone for the industry. “We are proud to collaborate with MTN Nigeria on this project. Our biodegradable SIM cards mark an important step toward a greener future for telecommunications,” he said.
MTN Nigeria’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Tobe Okigbo, said the initiative aligns with the company’s long-term sustainability agenda. “This partnership underscores our commitment to sustainability and innovation, while also supporting local businesses and economic growth through strategic alliances,” he noted.
