German actor Udo Kier, celebrated for his offbeat charisma and cult status in both arthouse and Hollywood cinema, has died at the age of 81 in Palm Springs, California, Variety reported. His partner, artist Delbert McBride, confirmed his passing, though no cause of death was given.
Born Udo Kierspe in Cologne in 1944, Kier survived an Allied air raid at birth and grew up amid postwar austerity. He moved to London at 18 to learn English and later built a career spanning more than 50 years, appearing in hundreds of films across Europe and the United States.
Kier rose to prominence in the 1970s with cult portrayals of Frankenstein and Dracula, collaborating with Andy Warhol and director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Known for his pale features and theatrical intensity, he became a fixture in independent and underground cinema. For his Dracula role, Kier famously subsisted on salad leaves and water for a week, leaving him temporarily wheelchair-bound.
He also worked with Danish director Lars von Trier on films including Manderlay, set on a fictional 1930s Alabama plantation, and the 2013 erotic art film Nymphomaniac.
Kier was equally comfortable in mainstream Hollywood, appearing in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Armageddon, and Blade, often portraying stylish villains, eccentric characters, or otherworldly figures.
Known for his flamboyant personality and love of nightlife, Kier once said, “I liked the attention. That’s why I became an actor.”
Kier spent his later years in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, leaving behind a legacy as one of cinema’s most distinctive and enduring screen presences.
