Nigeria’s aviation sector recorded a major milestone on 2 December 2025 as the Federal Ministry of Aviation launched the maiden Nigeria International Airshow at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The debut event attracted global aerospace manufacturers, senior defence officials, industry leaders and aviation enthusiasts.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) featured prominently during the opening ceremony, showcasing select aircraft in precision flypasts and static displays. The demonstrations, executed by experienced NAF aircrews, drew international attention and underscored Nigeria’s growing presence in global military aviation.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, the Chief of Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Yaro Abdullahi, highlighted Nigeria’s strategic position as an aviation hub at the crossroads of Africa and major global air routes. He pointed to the country’s youthful population, expanding aviation market and growing technological capabilities as key strengths. He also emphasised the need for stronger investment in airport upgrades, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, digital aviation systems and a competitive national carrier to fully harness the sector’s potential.
A highlight of the opening ceremony was the NAF-led flypast, during which an Augusta 109 LUH helicopter flew across the Abuja skyline carrying the National Flag and the airshow emblem. The display aligned with the event’s theme, “Redefining the Aviation Industry Through Investment and Global Engagement.”
The NAF’s strong showing at the airshow bolstered confidence in Nigeria’s aerospace capabilities and set an impressive tone for the programme, heightening international interest as the event progresses.
