The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami (SAN), his wife Asabe Bashir, and son Abdulaziz on charges of money laundering before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
EFCC counsel Jibrin Okutepa (SAN) informed the court that the hearing was scheduled for the defendants’ re-arraignment. He also applied to correct typographical errors in the charges, reducing the sums listed in Counts 11 and 12 from ₦325 billion to ₦325 million and ₦120 billion to ₦120 million, respectively. The defence, led by Joseph Daudu (SAN), did not oppose the corrections, which were granted by the court.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to all 16 counts brought against them by the EFCC.
The case has been reassigned several times. It was initially before Justice Emeka Nwite during the Christmas/New Year vacation, then transferred to Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who recused himself, before landing with Justice Abdulmalik. Justice Egwuatu had taken over after Justice Nwite previously presided over the case on December 30, 2025.
Malami and his son were remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre, while Asabe was held at Suleja Correctional Centre, before all three were granted ₦500 million bail each with two sureties on January 7.
