Concerns have emerged over the effectiveness of waste management efforts in Lagos State despite the allocation of more than N1 billion for sanitation infrastructure projects in 2025.
According to the Lagos State Government’s third-quarter 2025 budget implementation report, the Ministry of Environment recorded a year-to-date performance of 90.8 per cent under its sanitation infrastructure programme, indicating substantial expenditure on waste management and environmental projects.
However, heaps of refuse continue to litter major roads and public spaces across parts of the state, raising questions about the impact of the spending and the effectiveness of existing waste evacuation strategies.
Observations made in several areas, including Ilepo, Iyana Ipaja and Dopemu, revealed piles of uncollected waste along major roads, with residents expressing concerns over environmental sanitation and public health implications.
The situation has persisted despite the state government’s ongoing efforts to improve waste management and maintain cleaner surroundings.
In recent months, the Lagos State Government has intensified enforcement against illegal waste disposal, leading to the arrest and prosecution of several offenders found violating environmental regulations.
Stakeholders have called for stronger monitoring mechanisms, improved waste evacuation systems and greater accountability to ensure that investments in sanitation infrastructure translate into visible improvements across the state.
The development has renewed discussions on the need for sustainable waste management solutions to address growing environmental challenges in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
