Barely three weeks after former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, announced his defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the party’s North-West leadership has stated that he is not a registered member.
In a statement issued in Kaduna, the North-West Assistant Secretary of the SDP, Idris Inuwa, dismissed claims that El-Rufai had formally joined the party.
“It has come to our notice that certain individuals, including Nasir El-Rufai, are being rumoured to have joined the SDP. However, neither the Kaduna North Local Government chairman nor the leadership of Unguwar Sarki Ward has any record of these memberships,” Inuwa stated.
Call for Proper Registration Process
The party official urged El-Rufai and other prospective members to follow due process if they wish to join the SDP.
“We advise him and any other interested individuals to follow the proper procedures if they wish to officially become members of the party,” Inuwa said.
He also criticized the dissolution of the Kaduna State SDP working committee by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), reaffirming the North-West chapter’s commitment to due process.
“While we recognize the growing interest of individuals and groups in joining the SDP, we emphasize that there are well-defined guidelines governing membership admission. The Kaduna State chapter remains open to welcoming all prospective members who adhere to established procedures,” he added.
El-Rufai’s Defection from APC
It would be recalled that El-Rufai officially resigned from the APC on March 10, 2025, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s direction.
In a statement announcing his resignation, he accused the APC leadership of failing to address concerns about what he described as the party’s “capricious trajectory.”
