Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen have completed the signing of centre-back Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a deal that could rise to €40 million, the club confirmed on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old becomes the most expensive signing in Leverkusen’s history, surpassing the €32 million paid for midfielder Kerem Demirbay in 2019. According to Kicker and The Athletic, the transfer includes €10 million in performance-based add-ons and a €60 million buy-back clause that Liverpool can activate from summer 2027.
“We are very happy to sign Jarell Quansah, one of the most promising English central defenders,” said Simon Rolfes, Leverkusen’s Managing Director of Sport. “He made an impressive contribution at Liverpool, competing in a defence full of world-class players. He will bring dynamism, pace, and strength to our backline.”
Quansah, a product of Liverpool’s academy, joined the club at age five and made his senior debut in 2023. He recorded 58 appearances, winning two League Cups and the Premier League title during his time at Anfield.
The England U21 international joins Leverkusen as a direct replacement for former captain Jonathan Tah and becomes part of the club’s efforts to rebuild after a challenging season. Leverkusen, who made history by going unbeaten in the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign, finished 13 points behind champions Bayern Munich last term.
Commenting on his move, Quansah said: “The ambitious targets here were clearly explained to me during the negotiations. It’s a great challenge and role to be part of the Leverkusen rebuild.”
Quansah’s arrival comes as Leverkusen bid farewell to stars Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, both of whom joined Liverpool earlier this transfer window.
