FirstBank’s MREIF Loan Boosts Homeownership Access

By Ayomide Otitoju

For many Nigerians, owning a home has long seemed like a distant aspiration. However, the Mortgage Refinancing and Equity Investment Fund (MREIF) home loan offered by FirstBank of Nigeria is helping to reshape that reality by making mortgage financing more accessible.

Here are five important things to know about the initiative:

1. Tailored for Middle-Income Earners
The mortgage scheme is designed to support everyday Nigerians rather than high-income property investors. It provides a structured pathway for middle-income earners to transition from paying rent to owning homes through manageable repayment plans.

2. Single-Digit Interest Rate
The loan offers an annual interest rate of 9.75 percent, significantly lower than typical mortgage rates in Nigeria, which often run in double digits. The government-backed structure of the programme helps keep borrowing costs relatively affordable.

3. Pathway to Long-Term Financial Security
While rent represents a recurring expense, mortgage payments can help borrowers build equity in property over time. The MREIF loan aims to bridge the gap between current income and long-term asset ownership.

4. Accessible to Nigerians in the Diaspora
The scheme is also open to Nigerians living abroad. Applicants can qualify by providing international credit reports from agencies such as Equifax, along with other required documentation, enabling diaspora Nigerians to invest in property back home.

5. Lower Equity Contribution
One of the most attractive features of the programme is the reduced equity requirement. Borrowers are required to contribute 10 percent of the property value upfront, significantly lower than the 30–40 percent typically required for many mortgages in Nigeria. This lower entry threshold is expected to make homeownership more attainable for many Nigerians.
